Local service brands appear in AI answers when a product can find enough current evidence to make a useful recommendation for a specific job and place. Your job is to publish one consistent local recommendation record across your website, business profiles, reviews and legitimate third-party sources, then test what each product actually retrieves. There is no universal “AI local ranking factor” and no schema switch that guarantees inclusion.
The direct answer
Fix the commercial facts before you chase citations:
- the exact jobs you want;
- the places you genuinely serve;
- when and how somebody can book;
- licenses, qualifications or eligibility where they matter;
- current proof from real work;
- corroboration beyond your own website.
Then test the same service-and-location question across the products your customers use. Record whether you were mentioned, cited, linked, visited or called. Those are different outcomes. An answer that names you without a source is not a citation. A citation without a click is not a lead.
Build one local recommendation record
Most local businesses scatter their facts across a homepage, a half-finished Google Business Profile, stale directories and vague reviews. That forces every customer, and every retrieval system, to reconstruct the business.
Build a controlled record instead:
| Record field | What you should publish | Where it should agree |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Real-world business name, contact path and trading identity | Website, profiles and legitimate directories |
| Service | Exact job types, inclusions, exclusions and eligibility | Service pages, profile services and proof |
| Geography | Premises, service area and genuine coverage limitations | Contact, location pages and profiles |
| Availability | Hours, emergency status, booking method and response constraints | Website, profiles and booking flow |
| Qualification | License, registration, insurance or team credential where relevant | Team, service and public register |
| Proof | Completed-work evidence, reviews and case examples | Proof pages and independent platforms |
| Action | The next step and what information you need | Service page, profile and contact flow |
This is not “entity optimization” theatre. It is a disciplined way to stop the web telling three different stories about your business.
Separate the source classes
Different products can search, rank, retrieve or license different sources. Do not pretend your website controls all of them.
Sources you control
Your website should state the service, location, limitations, availability and next action in crawlable HTML. Use separate service pages for commercially distinct jobs. Build location pages only where the market and your operation justify unique information.
Google says pages supporting its AI features must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. It also says normal SEO foundations remain relevant and no special AI file or schema is required. OpenAI says public sites can appear in ChatGPT Search and identifies OAI-SearchBot access as an inclusion condition, not a placement guarantee.
Sources you manage but do not own
Business profiles, social profiles and trade platforms can carry hours, categories, photos, services and reviews. The platform controls eligibility and display. Your obligation is accuracy.
Google requires a Business Profile to represent the real business consistently, use an accurate address or service area and choose only the categories needed to describe the core business. Its local-ranking guidance describes relevance, distance and prominence; it also says reviews and links can contribute to prominence.
Those are Google local-search statements. They are not a disclosed universal formula for every AI product.
Sources you earn
Useful third-party evidence may include:
- public license or registration records;
- manufacturer or trade-association listings;
- local media and community references;
- legitimate business directories;
- supplier, partner or project references;
- genuine customer reviews.
The strongest source depends on the decision. A regulator may confirm a license. A manufacturer may confirm authorisation. A review may describe the job experience. None should be stretched to prove something it does not own.
Make service pages recommendation-ready
A weak service page says you are trusted, experienced and affordable. So does every competitor.
A useful page answers:
- What exact problem do you handle?
- What is included, and excluded?
- Which properties, customers or situations are a fit?
- Where can you genuinely deliver it?
- What affects price, timing or availability?
- What evidence can you show?
- What should the customer do now?
Write the direct answer near the top. Put changeable facts under an owner. If emergency availability changes, say what “emergency” means and keep the hours current. If a license matters, show the license accurately and link to the relevant register where appropriate.
The objective is not to sound machine-readable. It is to become hard to misrepresent.
Use local pages only when the operation is local
A suburb name is not information gain.
Create a dedicated local page when you can add real decision value such as:
- a staffed premises or genuine service base;
- a distinct service mix;
- response or booking conditions;
- local project evidence;
- property, climate or regulatory considerations;
- team coverage and escalation details.
If 40 suburb pages would say the same thing, build a strong regional service page and a clear coverage explanation. Page count does not make the business more local.
Treat reviews as evidence, not keyword inventory
Google permits businesses to ask customers for reviews, but prohibits incentives for posting, changing or removing reviews. It also advises that reviews reflect genuine experiences.
Do not script customers to mention keywords. Ask for honest feedback after a real job. Respond to useful criticism. Preserve service and location context when the customer volunteered it, but never rewrite their words into a performance claim.
Reviews can help a customer judge the business and can contribute to Google prominence. They do not guarantee an AI recommendation, and a recommendation does not validate the truth of every review.
Run a controlled recommendation test
Randomly asking an assistant “who is best?” and screenshotting one flattering answer proves almost nothing. Local answers can vary with the wording, location, account, date and product.
Use a test panel:
| Test variable | Keep or vary deliberately |
|---|---|
| Commercial job | Use a defined service, not “best business” |
| Geography | City, suburb or “near me” with location state recorded |
| Customer constraint | Urgency, property type, eligibility or budget posture |
| Product | Record the exact product and mode |
| Account state | Signed in/out and personalization where observable |
| Repetition | Repeat on separate dates; one run is not a trend |
| Output state | Mentioned, cited, linked, factually correct and selected |
Capture the full answer, visible sources, time, location state and prompt. Test competitors in the same panel. The aim is to find a repeatable evidence gap, not manufacture a vanity percentage.
Measure the commercial chain
Use five separate measures:
- Mentioned: your business name appeared.
- Cited: the answer attributed a claim to a source.
- Linked: the user received a clickable path.
- Visited: analytics recorded a referral or landing session.
- Converted: the visit produced a suitable call, booking or lead.
Add factual accuracy as a safety measure. A wrong phone number or service area can make visibility worse than absence.
Google reports traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside Search Console's Web search type rather than as a clean standalone channel. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. Measurement therefore needs platform-specific handling; do not merge everything into an invented “AI visibility score”.
What to fix first
Pick one high-value job in one priority area.
- Freeze the answer currently shown across relevant products.
- Check the service page, profile, reviews and independent sources.
- List every contradiction and missing decision fact.
- Fix the owned facts and legitimate managed profiles.
- Earn the corroboration the decision actually requires.
- Retest with the same panel.
- Watch calls and bookings separately from answer appearances.
One clean market test will teach you more than 100 generic AI articles.
If the website, profile and service-area model disagree before the test begins, use the service-area SEO guide first. For a branch network, run the multi-location AI search checklist location by location instead of accepting one brand-level score.
FAQ
Do all AI products use the same local sources?
No. Products can use different search systems, licensed datasets, public pages and response methods. Test each product and record its visible sources rather than assuming one formula.
Is Google Business Profile enough?
No. It is an important Google-controlled local surface, but customers also need useful service pages, accurate booking information, proof and independent context. Other AI products do not publish a rule saying a Google profile guarantees inclusion.
Do reviews cause AI recommendations?
No causal guarantee is published. Google says reviews can help local prominence and customer decisions. Treat reviews as one source class, not a placement switch.
Does LocalBusiness schema guarantee inclusion?
No. Accurate structured data can reduce ambiguity. Google explicitly says no special schema is required for its AI features and eligibility never guarantees display.
Should we build a page for every suburb?
Only where the page has a distinct operational and customer job. Repeated place-name pages are not a local strategy.
How long does this take?
You can correct facts immediately. Crawling, indexation, profile processing, third-party corroboration and recommendation behavior follow different schedules. No honest operator can promise a fixed inclusion date.
What is the first useful metric?
Factual accuracy across a controlled set of profitable service-and-location prompts. Once that is stable, track mentions, citations, links, visits and suitable enquiries separately.
