SEO, AEO and GEO are not three rival strategies. They are three ways of improving the same outcome: making your business discoverable, understandable and credible wherever a customer searches.

  • SEO improves your visibility in search results and the quality of the pages people land on.
  • AEO makes your information easier to select and present as a direct answer.
  • GEO focuses on how your brand and evidence appear in generative answers, comparisons and recommendations.

You may need more of one than another, but you still need one connected search system underneath them.

The difference at a glance

Lens The question it answers What you improve Useful evidence
SEO Can the right customer find and choose this page? Crawlability, intent match, architecture, authority and conversion Search impressions, clicks, rankings and qualified conversions
AEO Can the system extract a complete, accurate answer? Definitions, answer blocks, headings, source support and entity clarity Answer-surface presence, supporting-link visibility and answer-page performance
GEO Is the brand represented accurately when a generative system synthesises the market? Brand facts, independent corroboration, source coverage and comparison readiness Mentions, citations, source mix, referral visits and assisted outcomes

The labels overlap because the underlying systems overlap. A crawlable page with a clear answer, strong internal links and supportable facts can contribute to all three. A technically blocked page, a vague offer or an unsupported claim can weaken all three.

What SEO still owns

SEO is the foundation. It connects real search demand to pages that deserve to be found and can turn discovery into action.

That includes:

  • deciding which page owns each commercial or informational intent;
  • making important pages crawlable, indexable and internally linked;
  • matching the page format and depth to the query;
  • consolidating duplicates that compete for the same job;
  • earning relevant authority and trust;
  • improving titles, snippets, page experience and conversion paths.

Google's Search Essentials remain the baseline. Google's guidance for AI features also says the same SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no separate technical shortcut that makes poor SEO irrelevant.

If you have weak service pages, broken internal linking, unclear positioning or hundreds of thin articles, start there. Adding a new acronym will not repair a weak website.

What AEO changes

AEO changes how clearly a page carries an answer.

A traditional page can be relevant but still make the reader work too hard. The definition is buried. The comparison is scattered across several sections. A qualification appears far away from the claim it limits. AEO work closes those gaps.

On an important page, that usually means:

  1. answering the central question immediately;
  2. keeping each section responsible for one sub-question;
  3. using a table, list or sequence when it makes the answer easier to understand;
  4. putting evidence and limitations next to the claim they support;
  5. making company, service, product and people facts consistent;
  6. linking to the stronger source when a short answer needs deeper support.

This is not a formula for stuffing every page with FAQs. It is information design. The right format is the one that lets a customer understand the answer without losing the nuance that makes it true.

What GEO changes

GEO looks beyond one page and asks whether a generative system can place your brand correctly in the category.

Your own website is the source layer you control. It should define your offer, expertise, people, locations, methods and evidence clearly. But a business cannot declare itself the market's best source and expect the rest of the web to agree. Generative answers can draw on multiple searches and sources, so independent corroboration matters too.

GEO work can include:

  • correcting inconsistent brand and service facts;
  • publishing original evidence that is genuinely useful;
  • earning relevant coverage, reviews and references;
  • improving category and comparison pages;
  • monitoring which sources appear in priority answers;
  • fixing inaccurate or unsupported descriptions at their source;
  • measuring mentions, citations, links and visits as different events.

OpenAI's publisher guidance says public sites can appear in ChatGPT search and explains how OAI-SearchBot access and tagged referral links work. It does not promise inclusion. Access makes retrieval possible; it does not make your brand the answer.

Google is unusually direct on this point: its established SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and there are no additional technical requirements or special schema types for appearing in them.

To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google also states that meeting the requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving. See AI features and your website.

That gives you a useful boundary:

  • technical access creates eligibility;
  • useful, well-structured content creates a stronger source;
  • relevant authority and corroboration strengthen confidence;
  • the platform still decides what it shows.

Anyone selling guaranteed inclusion, a magic schema type or a single file that unlocks AI visibility is selling certainty the platforms do not provide.

Which one should you prioritize?

Start with the constraint that is stopping the whole system.

Prioritize SEO when discovery is broken

Lead with SEO when:

  • important pages are not indexed or do not rank;
  • multiple pages compete for the same query;
  • the site has weak commercial architecture;
  • internal links do not establish clear topic ownership;
  • organic visits do not turn into enquiries or sales.

Your first move is to fix the site and the page jobs.

Prioritize AEO when the page is visible but the answer is weak

Lead with AEO when:

  • the page gets impressions but buries the answer;
  • important definitions or comparisons are ambiguous;
  • facts cannot be verified quickly;
  • headings do not match the questions people ask;
  • a useful short answer cannot be extracted without losing accuracy.

Your first move is to improve the owned source.

Prioritize GEO when the market describes you badly, or not at all

Lead with GEO when:

  • your own facts are inconsistent across the web;
  • independent sources do not support the category position you want;
  • generative answers mention competitors but omit you from legitimate comparisons;
  • your brand appears, but for the wrong service, market or use case;
  • you cannot tell which sources shape the answer.

Your first move is to define the association you deserve, repair the source layer and strengthen honest corroboration.

What should be shared across all three?

The strongest program does not run three disconnected backlogs. It builds one living website and one measurement loop.

At Searchmaxxed, that system connects:

  • an Agentic Website that can be improved continuously rather than rebuilt in occasional campaigns;
  • an AI Source Layer that keeps important facts, evidence and answer assets clear;
  • a Managed Search Loop that observes demand, ships the highest-value change and measures what happened.

The execution inside that system can include technical SEO, commercial pages, content, internal linking, structured data, entity work and relevant independent authority. The label changes with the problem. The operating system does not.

You can see the focused two-way comparison in AEO vs SEO: what changes when search becomes answers and the commercial scope in our answer engine optimization service.

How should you measure the work?

Do not collapse every signal into one “AI visibility score”.

Keep the evidence in order:

  1. Eligibility: can the platform access, index and render the page?
  2. Observation: did the page or brand appear for the fixed query set?
  3. Attribution: was there a mention, citation, link or referral?
  4. Behavior: did the visitor engage with the right page?
  5. Commercial outcome: did the journey contribute to a qualified enquiry, sale or revenue?

Google's Search Console reporting and OpenAI's tagged referral URLs can expose parts of this chain. Other parts require repeatable observation and honest attribution limits. Unavailable data should stay unavailable, not be converted into a zero or a fabricated estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO improves how information is answered and extracted, but it still depends on discoverable, accessible and credible pages. SEO remains the foundation.

Are AEO and GEO the same thing?

They overlap. AEO concentrates on the answer itself; GEO considers the wider generative response, including brand representation, comparison and supporting sources. In practice, many of the improvements support both.

Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special schema required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data should match visible content and be used where Google supports the relevant type.

Can you guarantee an AI citation?

No. You can improve access, source quality, clarity and corroboration. The platform still controls selection and presentation.

What should a smaller business do first?

Fix the page closest to revenue and the strongest supporting question around it. You do not need an enterprise dashboard to make one service page clearer, consolidate a duplicate or measure whether the change improved valuable enquiries.

What should an enterprise do differently?

The principles remain the same, but ownership becomes harder. You need governance for facts, templates, markets, approvals, source quality and measurement so one team does not quietly contradict another.

Build one search system

The difference between SEO, AEO and GEO matters when it helps you diagnose the constraint. It becomes a distraction when three labels create three disconnected strategies.
