There is no universal AEO price because there is no universal AEO scope. A small site that needs ten important pages repaired is not the same job as a multi-market website with thousands of URLs, conflicting brand facts and several approval teams.
The useful question is: what will it cost to remove the visibility constraint that matters to your business, and what will be measurably different when the work is complete?
The short answer
Price AEO against five things:
- the number and value of questions you need to own;
- the condition and complexity of your website;
- the owned pages and independent sources that need work;
- who will implement the changes;
- how visibility and commercial impact will be measured.
A cheap audit can be valuable when it produces a precise, implementable decision. An expensive retainer can be useless when it buys prompt charts, generic articles and no accountable website changes.
Why we do not publish a fake market-wide range
Current AEO pricing pages publish dramatically different rates, currencies and package definitions. Some prices cover monitoring software. Others cover strategy, content, development, digital PR or a full managed program. Comparing the headline numbers without normalising the scope creates false precision.
The platforms do not publish an “AEO rate”. Google says its established SEO foundations remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode and that there are no extra technical requirements or special schema types for inclusion. OpenAI documents crawler access and referral tracking for ChatGPT search, but it does not prescribe a commercial service model.
So a defensible budget starts with your opportunity and delivery burden, not an invented industry average.
What are you actually buying?
| Scope layer | What the work can include | What completion should prove |
|---|---|---|
| Market intelligence | Priority queries, prompts, competitors, answer surfaces and source patterns | A dated, bounded opportunity set with known platform and market limits |
| Route ownership | Commercial parent pages, supporting articles and consolidation decisions | One accountable URL and page job for each priority intent |
| Website access | Crawl, index, rendering, canonical, sitemap and internal-link repairs | Important pages are accessible and indexable where intended |
| Source quality | Direct answers, evidence, entities, authorship and structured data | Claims are supportable and machine-readable content matches visible content |
| Independent authority | Relevant profiles, reviews, publishers and communities | The plan distinguishes owned claims from earned corroboration |
| Conversion | Offer clarity, proof, calls to action and enquiry paths | The right visitor can understand the value and take the next step |
| Measurement | Search, answer, referral and conversion instrumentation | Observed states are separate from inferred or unavailable states |
If a proposal calls all of this “content”, it is hiding the hard parts.
The three common engagement models
A focused foundation
Use a focused project when the problem is bounded and your team can implement quickly.
It might cover:
- a fixed query and answer baseline;
- technical access checks;
- route and topic-cluster ownership;
- direct review of the highest-value pages;
- source and entity gaps;
- a prioritized implementation plan;
- a measurement specification.
This model fails when the deliverable is only a presentation and nobody owns the changes.
An implementation sprint
Use a sprint when you know the target but need the website changed.
The work can include:
- consolidating competing pages;
- rebuilding one commercial cluster;
- improving source-backed copy;
- implementing relevant structured data;
- repairing internal links and templates;
- connecting analytics and conversion events;
- retesting the same query set after release.
The fee should follow the implementation surface: number of templates, engineering complexity, content depth, review burden and release risk.
A managed search program
Use an ongoing program when the market, website and source environment keep moving.
You should expect:
- continuous market observation;
- a ranked backlog tied to commercial opportunity;
- ongoing technical, editorial and authority work;
- a clear shipping cadence;
- repeatable measurement;
- senior ownership of trade-offs and quality.
At Searchmaxxed, this sits inside the Managed Search Loop. We are not selling a monthly bundle of articles. We are improving a living search system.
What drives AEO cost up?
A large or messy route inventory
More URLs do not merely mean more copy. They increase the risk of duplication, cannibalisation, inconsistent facts, broken links and template defects.
Multiple markets, languages or locations
Each market can change the query set, competitors, sources, regulatory context and conversion path. Localisation is not find-and-replace.
Weak technical foundations
Rendering problems, incorrect canonicals, index bloat, poor site architecture and a development backlog move the job beyond editorial work.
High-stakes claims
Health, finance, legal and regulated topics need stricter source selection, qualified review and claim boundaries. That takes time because it should.
Thin first-party evidence
If your strongest claims cannot be substantiated, the scope must include evidence development or remove the claim. It cannot safely substitute confident language for proof.
Slow implementation and approvals
The same strategy costs more when several teams must approve every page, releases are infrequent or the provider cannot edit the owning source.
What keeps the investment efficient?
You can reduce waste without reducing quality.
- Start with one commercial cluster, not the entire internet.
- Preserve pages that already earn useful demand.
- Consolidate duplicate routes instead of rewriting all of them.
- Give one owner authority to make bounded decisions.
- Fix reusable template defects once.
- Use first-party conversion data before buying more monitoring.
- Run a fixed observation set so reports are comparable.
- Pay for senior judgement on the pages where mistakes are expensive.
The smallest useful scope is not the cheapest list of deliverables. It is the smallest intervention capable of removing the real constraint.
How to compare two AEO proposals
Put both proposals through the same test.
| Question | Strong answer | Weak answer |
|---|---|---|
| Which market and questions are in scope? | Named cohort, location, platform and date | “All relevant AI prompts” |
| Which pages will change? | Named URLs, owners and page jobs | “Content optimization” |
| Who implements? | Clear responsibility for copy, code, review and release | Recommendations handed to an unspecified team |
| How are claims checked? | Approved proof and primary sources at point of claim | Confident copy with no evidence boundary |
| What is off-page? | Relevant earned-source plan with no manufactured advocacy | Bulk listings or vague “authority signals” |
| How is success measured? | Eligibility, observations, referrals and conversions kept separate | One proprietary visibility score |
| What happens after launch? | Fixed cohort retest and next-decision rule | Monthly reporting with no action |
The provider should also be able to explain what is not included. Honest scope is a strength.

What should your budget produce first?
The first batch should produce a closed loop:
- choose one commercially important topic cluster;
- establish the current search and answer evidence;
- assign one page to each distinct intent;
- improve the commercial parent and its strongest supporting source;
- repair technical and internal-link barriers;
- release safely;
- rerun the same evidence set;
- choose the next change.
That gives you something stronger than activity: an operating model you can repeat.
How should value be measured?
Do not price an AEO program by multiplying unobserved mentions by an assumed revenue figure.
Use separate paths:
- search path: impressions → clicks → qualified conversions;
- observable AI-referral path: tagged referral → landing page → conversion;
- assisted path: observed answer presence → later branded or direct visit → attributed contribution under your chosen model;
- risk path: important wrong or missing answer → corrective source work;
- operational path: duplicated work, slow releases or recurring defects removed.
The AEO reporting dashboard guide shows how to keep those evidence states separate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy AEO as a one-off project?
Yes, when the scope is genuinely bounded and someone can implement the work. A foundation or cluster sprint is often the right first step. Ongoing work is useful when the market and site require continuous improvement.
Is software included in AEO pricing?
Sometimes. Ask which subscriptions, prompt volumes, markets and users are included. Monitoring software observes a problem; it does not implement the repair.
Should content production be included?
Only where new content is the right decision. Rewriting, consolidating or retiring existing pages may create more value than publishing another article.
Should technical SEO be included?
The scope must at least diagnose technical access and define ownership. If implementation is excluded, the proposal should name that dependency clearly.
Can an agency guarantee AI citations?
No. It can improve access, page quality, evidence and corroboration. Selection remains controlled by the platform.
How do I know whether an ongoing retainer is worth it?
The retainer should show a repeatable sequence from evidence to shipped change to measured result. If every month ends in the same dashboard and another generic content quota, it is not a managed improvement loop.
Price the constraint, then prove the work
The right AEO investment is the one that fixes a commercially important visibility problem with clear ownership and evidence. It may be a narrow sprint. It may be a managed program. The label does not decide the price.
